Peter Saville on his album cover artwork
Peter Saville describes the now well-known image the band chose for Unknown Pleasures as ”both technical and sensual”. These words seem apt in describing a common thread or sense of their music in both Joy Division and New Order, which I consider two very separate bands, as well as Saville’s aesthetic sense of and for them as artists. Also, in some ways I enjoyed Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak a lot because the color coding on the art reminded me so much of Saville’s work for New Order. It feels like a conscious choice, reflecting Kanye’s incorporation of synth and electro elements in that album in a callback that feels like New Order’s move into more electronic/dance-influenced music. In a way, the form both reflects and influences the content and vice versa.
