Blue Monday 1988, demo (samples version 1)

As promised, here is a demo version of “Blue Monday 1988” containing more annoying samples than the official 12” release.

I only just today came across a batch of New Order 1988 demo/rehearsal recordings. These would be from the Technique sessions, most likely at Real World studios. Amongst the album track takes and isolated snippets of Peter Hook riffing, there’s also some versions of the dreaded “Blue Monday 1988”.

If you know me or have followed this blog for a while, you’ll know that I despise the 1988 version of “Blue Monday”. They took a classic, sleek, powerful track and junked it up, making it sound cheap and dated. I don’t know what’s worse, the pasted-on shwanka-shwanka guitar, the weak percussion, or the randomly applied samples.

No, wait, the samples are certainly the worst bit.

So with that in mind, here’s a rare version of the 12” mix of “Blue Monday 1988”without the offending samples.

(Tomorrow I’ll post a different demo mix that has more samples than the released version.)
