This is the synth that created the famous bass line in New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’. You have no idea how much I want this. It’s on eBay for only $1.6k. Let’s start a fundraiser. Only half joking.

New Order - Blue Monday

Music for Design

Along with hip hop, it took me a long time to get into 80s music. I always thought it was a bit corny and that they were cheating with synthesizers and computers. Now all I want to do is drop out of design school and play with synthesizers!

I think what can be accomplished with electronic sound is just a whole spectrum of emotion and effects. I always loved Joy Division for their dark sound, which then translates well into New Order with synthesizers. It’s pretty cool to hear all of these 80s / electronic music elements making their way around back into music again.

Biosphere - “Blue Monday”

Following up on my previous post regarding the current New Order issue of MOJO, here’s Biosphere’s cover of “Blue Monday”.

I like it pretty well, which is not surprising given I’ve been a Biosphere fan for years. Don’t expect an ambient track, though. This sound here follows more from his recent N-Plants album, although it does seem like he’s sampled Peter Hook’s bass. I’m not sure who the female vocalist is.

Wolff plays a cover… Blue Monday

Wolff and Tuba

No joke, this is one of the better “Blue Monday” covers I’ve come across. I was not expecting him to actually sing through the tuba, but it works. The whole thing sounds like some ancient Cabaret Voltaire tape. (The sound quality on the video is dodgy, so you’ll want to put on some headphones and turn it up. Also, the performance doesn’t really begin until the 2:30 mark.)

There’s a fuller “studio” version with better sounds and live drums on his website, but I actually prefer the vibe of this live video version.
